Crossroads II this Sunday, February 18, 2024
Callings: Called to Help the People of South Sudan The class will be held in the Session Room (and on Zoom).
Our guest speaker this Sunday is Jacob Atem. Jacob was one of the “Lost Boys of Sudan.”
When he was just six years old, Jacob’s village in South Sudan was set on fire and his family members were either killed or taken into slavery.
He fled Sudan with an estimated 26,000 to 30,000 children. About 10,000 of the children died before reaching refugee camps in Kenya, where he spent nine years.
Jacob was resettled in a foster home in Michigan, earned his Master of Public Health from Michigan State University and his PhD in Environmental and Global Health from the University of Florida. In his senior year of college, with a fellow Lost Boy, he cofounded Southern Sudan Healthcare Organization (SSHCO), which provides health education and health care through a medical clinic.
His journey from South Sudan provided him great perspective and understanding about the public health problems of refugees. Through his career in public health, he is now part of the solution.
Jacob said, “I have been helped in so many ways by others, and to be able to give back—by helping people in the U.S., in Africa and someday around the world—is the greatest gift.” His motto is “Let’s Change the World Together.”
Please join us for coffee (and on Zoom) at 8:45 and class will begin at 9:00.
