Eternity with the unequaled “Rose of Sharon”; With a song in my heart; thoughts from our music director, Rick Roberts.

Good Terrific Tuesday!
A little too chilly this morning. Brrrrrrrrrr! A good mug of hot chocolate is comforting, isn’t it? Tuesday is “hymn day”, and the focus is especially on Advent hymns. Today, we’ll talk about one of the oldest hymns ever written: “Lo, How a Rose Ere Blooming”. Written in the 16th century and found in a manuscript in a St. Alban’s monastery, this beloved song has been sung throughout the world. The author is unknown, but famous composer, Michael Praetorius, harmonized the tune in 1609. An interesting fact is that this carol has a total of 23 verses, but most hymnals only record 3 to 4 verses. Legend has it that on Christmas Eve, a monk in Trier, Germany, found a blooming rose while walking in the snow-covered woods. He placed the rose on the altar of the church for the Christmas Eve service. The words of the first verse reveal the promise of the Saviour: |
