Joy; With a song in my heart; thoughts from our music director, Rick Roberts.
There is nothing on this earth better than bringing joy to others. I know this for a fact. The joy of the choir anthem. The beauty of the flowers in the sanctuary. The beaming faces of singers singing Christmas carols. The lighting of the Christmas candles in an ever-increasing brightness of a darkened sanctuary as we sing “Silent Night” on Christmas Eve. The puppy as a gift for a child. A new bike or a piece of jewelry. All these things bring joy to others. But I prefer what the Bible says:
Helping others often brings joy and hope. In this dark world we live in, every corner can be consumed with the joy of brightness for those who need comforting, a helping hand, a meal, or something as simple as a smile. The residual benefit is sometimes overwhelming. When we reach out, joy comes to our hearts as well. The Bible addresses this phenomenon of what I call “Joy in reverse”:
During this time of the year many do not have joy. The season reminds them of better times shared with loved ones. There may be financial difficulties. The empty chair at the table. There may not be any presents under the tree. There may not even be a tree.
We have the opportunity to bring the joy of brightening the lives of others, not only in this season, but everyday. I promise you, the gift of spreading joy is infectious.
What brings the greatest joy to me?
