News You Need to Know! – (July 4th edition)
Happy 250th Anniversary America!
Here’s the News You Need to Know!
As the July 4th weekend begins and we celebrate the 250 Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, I thought you might be interested to know that Presbyterianism has had a long, rich, and influential history in the founding of our nation. Presbyterians were some of the earliest immigrants to this country, arriving as early as 1630, and the first Presbytery was formed in 1706. Presbyterians played such a significant role in the American Revolution that in England the conflict was frequently dubbed the "Presbyterian Rebellion,” and King George III’s prime minister, Lord North, even remarked, "Cousin America has run off with a Presbyterian parson!" 12 of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence were Presbyterians, including the only clergyman to sign, John Witherspoon. And when it came time for the “Founding Fathers” to craft a Constitution for a new nation, they based it on the Presbyterian model of representative governance.
I hope you’ll make worship at Fort King part of your holiday weekend; my sermon this Sunday is entitled “What If America Was a Christian Nation?”Then, join us for our next Book Club discussion on Wednesday, July 8th at 11:00 a.m. as I lead a discussion on the bestseller “Separation of Church and Hate: A Sane Person’s Guide to Taking Back the Bible from Fundamentalists, Fascists, and Flock-Fleecing Frauds” by author, actor, and podcaster John Fugelsang.
See you Sunday!
