Pastor Bob’s news for Friday 10-03-2025
Happy Friday Fort King Family –
here’s this weekend’s edition of
“The News You Need to Know!”

This coming Sunday (October 5th) is World Communion Sunday, which is one of my favorite days of the Christian calendar! Every year, on the first Sunday of October, Christians around the globe give witness to the fact that though we are many, we are in One in Christ, by celebrating the Sacrament of Holy Communion, each in our own unique ways and places of worship. At Fort King we will mark the day with a special service filled with prayers and songs representing Christians around the world!
The idea for a World-Wide Communion Sunday was the brainchild of Rev. Hugh Thompson Kerr, the minister of the Shadyside Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, in 1933; it became an official Presbyterian-wide observance in 1936; and in 1940 was formally adopted by the National Council of Churches; since then it has become recognized by more-and-more Christian groups around the world. So, as we prepare to come to the Table of our Savior this coming Sunday, I ask that you visualize the Communion Table stretching around the world, where people from every race, tribe, and tongue are welcomed as brothers and sisters in Christ.
Peace and Global Witness Offering: Believing that peacemaking is central to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to the Mission of the Presbyterian Church, every year on World Communion Sunday our denomination takes up the Peace and Global Witness special offering. 25% of what we collect will be used by our church to support peacemaking efforts in our community; the other 75% allows the PCUSA to participate in peacemaking work with mission partners around the globe. Please give generously!
Congregational Meeting: Following the worship service all members are asked to stay for a brief, but very important, Congregational Meeting. At this time, we will present to you the slate of candidates who have been asked to serve on the Session beginning next year, and those asked to serve on the Pastoral Nominating Committee (PNC), the group we will task with searching for our next permanent pastor.
Crossroads Class: Before Worship, you are invited to join our Adult Discipleship Class at 9:00 a.m. The Crossroads Class is beginning a study on the life of Christ based on Elaine Pagel’s new book “Signs and Wonder.” This week, Susan Peters will lead us through a discussion based on the topic of “The Virgin Birth: What Happened.” All are welcome!
Equal Exchange Sunday: And after the service, stop by the Equal Exchange Table in the Narthex. Equal Exchange is the oldest and largest Fair-Trade company in the country; they support small farm cooperatives from around the world, by providing markets – like our church – to sell their products, such as organic chocolates, coffees, teas, etc. You can feel good about what you are eating, and knowing that you are supporting the self-development of people around the world.
See you Sunday!
